I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Nuffield Department of Population Health at the University of Oxford. I came out in my mid-twenties, but realised that in a work-environment it really depends on how welcoming and inclusive it feels to be able to be open and just yourself.
I believe being a LGBT+ Role Model is a way to provide this environment head-on by showing ‘I am here, I am queer - so if you are too you are not alone’. It’s not long ago that being part of the LGBT+ community was a reason for prosecution by law and it still is in many places - being an LGBT+ Role Model means to me embracing this change and standing visibly for an institution that values the rights of all people identifying as part of the LGBT+ community.
