Athena Swan Community and Support

Athena Swan facilitators and Self-Assessment Teams across the University are supported by the Equality and Diversity Unit and divisional EDI leadership teams.

Athena Swan Working Group (ASWG)

The Athena Swan Working Group (ASWG) group ensures sustainable support for departmental Athena Swan work, and brings together Athena Swan experts, data specialists and academic and support staff involved in developing submissions and implementing actions at departmental level. 

The main responsibilities of the group are to:

  • Provide university-wide strategic and resource planning for Athena Swan department/faculty applications and identify the necessary support and resources needed to achieve an Athena Swan award
  • Act as a University-wide conduit for operational Athena Swan concerns to feed into Athena Swan-related communications with the membership body, Advance HE
  • Identify and address Athena Swan-related issues and escalate them, where possible, to the relevant oversight committee
  • Operate as a conduit for questions or concerns on the access of relevant data for Athena Swan applications, working closely with HR Reporting, the Equality and Diversity Unit and the People Department.

Membership

The ASWG is coordinated by the Equality and Diversity Unit and chaired by the Policy Advisor for Gender Equality and Athena Swan. The membership comprises:

  • Jennifer Chapin, Policy Advisor for Gender Equality and Athena Swan, Equality and Diversity Unit (Chair)
  • Amy Hinks, Divisional representative on Athena Swan (MPLS)
  • Catherine Goodwin, Divisional representative on Athena Swan (SSD)
  • Katherine Corr, Divisional representative on Athena Swan (MSD)
  • Machilu van Bever Donker, Divisional representative on Athena Swan (Humanities)
  • Athena Artuso, Representative from HR Reporting with responsibility for Athena Swan data (HR Systems)
  • Laura Jones, Policy Advisor for Insight and Engagement (EDU)
  • Charlotte Smith, Chair, EDI Facilitators Network
  • Jarlath Brine, Representative from a department/faculty Self-Assessment Team (Engineering)

Athena Swan Learning and Community sessions

The Working Group regularly offers opportunities for learning and networking for those staff and students working on Athena Swan across the University.

These sessions normally take place termly. In the 24-25 academic year, these included:

  • Athena Swan Learning Showcase (MT24) 
  • Gender and Organisational Change (MT24)
  • What does leading in gender equality look like? Going for Gold (TT25)

Sessions are advertised in the EDI Hub Bulletin, and all slide presentations and recordings, where possible, are saved in the Athena Swan Resource Bank.
