I joined the University in November 2021, having previously worked at Oxford University Press (OUP) for over a decade. I’ve been out as queer more or less from my first day at the University – it’s one of the privileges of having an EDI role. Nevertheless, as a pansexual woman in a long-term partnership with a cis man, I am acutely aware of biphobia and bi invisibility.
I’m also polyamorous, which brings its own challenges when it comes to being out at work. I am open about it, but I always feel I have to be ready with answers to people’s questions. I’d be glad to support others who are feeling that weariness of having to explain yourself again and again.
Solidarity with trans and non-binary people is very important to me. At OUP, I sat on the LGBTQ+ Staff Network Committee as the trans and non-binary representative until a trans colleague felt comfortable taking over. I was also involved in developing a set of policies and protections for trans and non-binary staff. Lately I have been developing a new relationship with my own gender identity and am still in the process of figuring out what gender means to me!
I was a Unite the Union workplace rep for over four years, and I have also acted as a workplace “befriender” for LGBTQ+ people and those experiencing mental health challenges. I am always open to being contacted for informal support or to offer a friendly ear.
Outside work, I like to draw cartoons, write limericks, cook tasty vegan dishes, and exchange queer podcast recommendations.
