I have worked in higher education since 2012 and, while like many in the LGBT+ community I’ve had some not-so-good experiences when it came to being open about my protected characteristics in the workplace, over the last 10+ years the good experiences have grown in number and in quality.
I’ve tended to feel most comfortable when the people around me have been welcoming and accepting, and seeing people “like me” at work, living their normal lives, has been an important part of that. It’s for this reason that I have been pleased to be part of the LGBT+ role models scheme.
