When I was an undergraduate student at St Hilda’s I remember one of my tutors brought her partner along to a college dinner. I’m sure that this tutor had no idea about the impact that this small act had on my own sense of safety and acceptance and that of my then girlfriend (now wife!). I’m now a lecturer at the Department of Education, where I work with beginning teachers. Having taken part in the LGBTQ+ Role Model training, I’m hoping that my own visibility might have a similar effect in contributing to an inclusive and safe environment for all staff and students.
