I attended the LGBT+ Ally workshop in order to educate myself not only on the challenges faced by the LGBT+ community, but on what I can do to support them. I heard from voices within the community on their lived experience and learnt how I have a critical role to play in fostering an inclusive and safe environment where all staff and students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender, can be themselves. I learnt that it’s sometimes the simplest of changes that can make a big difference. For example: I wear a rainbow lanyard and include my pronouns (she/her) in my email signature and name on video calls and I circulate the Equality and Diversity newsletter to colleagues so that they are kept informed of the latest information. I also made a commitment to continually challenge those who threaten to damage the culture of inclusivity and diversity within this University and wider community.
